Online Group Exhibition - “Standing Where Others Stood” - Summer 2026
Analog Forever Magazine is proud to present “Standing Where Others Stood," an online group exhibition featuring 44 images created with analog and film processes.
Jurors Yoav Friedlander and Dana Stirling write:
Landscape photography has always carried with it a strange sense of repetition. We stand before mountains, coastlines, forests, deserts, overlooks, and roadside attractions knowing that someone has likely stood there before us, perhaps with a camera in hand, looking outward from nearly the same place. Yet no photograph of a landscape is ever quite the same. The land may be familiar, but the encounter is not.
Standing Where Others Stood brings together analog photographs that consider this relationship between place, memory, photographic history, and the individual experience of moving through the natural world. The works in this exhibition range from expansive wilderness and recognizable destinations to quiet roadside scenes, intimate details, and landscapes whose importance is rooted less in cultural recognition than in personal experience. Together, they remind us that landscape is not simply something photographed, but something continually interpreted.
Since the earliest years of photography, the camera has been used to explore, document, map, preserve, and mythologize the land. Certain viewpoints have become embedded within our visual memory through repetition, while countless others remain known only to the people who encounter them. To photograph a landscape today is therefore to enter into an existing visual history. Each image carries traces of what came before it while also recording something fleeting: a particular light, season, journey, weather pattern, state of mind, or moment of attention.
The use of film adds another dimension to this relationship. Analog photography is inherently physical. Light meets an emulsion; images remain latent before they can be seen; each frame is finite. The process introduces distance between experiencing a place and ultimately seeing the photograph made there. Within that delay, memory begins to intervene.
At a time when images can be produced and circulated almost instantaneously, the deliberate nature of film can make photographing the landscape feel particularly meaningful. It asks the photographer to observe, choose, wait, and ultimately accept some degree of uncertainty. These qualities echo the experience of being outdoors itself, where time is often measured differently and attention can shift toward details that might otherwise pass unnoticed.
The photographs in Standing Where Others Stood are connected not by a single definition of landscape, but by a shared impulse to look outward and to record an encounter with a place. They speak to exploration and familiarity, nostalgia and discovery, the iconic and the overlooked. Collectively, they consider what it means to make another photograph of a world that has been photographed countless times before and how, through the particularity of a person, a moment, and a piece of film, it can still be seen anew.
