What do we give ourselves to?
Devotion takes many forms. It can be sacred or secular, private or communal, quiet or consuming. We devote ourselves to people and places, gods and rituals, landscapes, traditions, ideas, and acts of creation. We tend gardens, care for bodies, return to familiar places, repeat gestures, preserve memories, make offerings, keep vigil.
Devotion also has its shadows. Love can become obsession. Faith can become fanaticism. Ritual can become compulsion, and loyalty can ask us to sacrifice parts of ourselves.
For Devotion, we invite photographers to consider the people, places, practices, and beliefs to which we give our attention again and again. What do we worship, protect, tend, desire, or refuse to relinquish? What does devotion ask of us?
Interpretations may be spiritual, romantic, familial, ecological, creative, personal, or entirely unexpected. We are interested not only in the objects of devotion, or its light and dark aspects, but also in its evidence in our lives and in the world. We invite you to explore the many forms of devotion through film and analog photography.

ABOUT THE CURATOR
Laura Barth
Laura Barth is a lens-based multidisciplinary artist whose work has been showcased in galleries and in print in the United States and abroad. She transforms memory, spirituality, and personal mythology into tactile, emotive visual alchemy through experimental analog photographic processes, particularly Polaroid emulsion lifts.
Laura became passionate about analog and instant photography because of its unique ability to capture moods, feelings, and memories, as well as the freedom it allows for creative experimentation, physical manipulation, and incorporation of mixed media. She is drawn to intuitive and experimental approaches that create unpredictable results and imperfections in the final image, inviting the viewer to fill in the blanks with their own experiences.
