Workshop: Inspired Darkroom Techniques with Tricia Rosenkilde

  • The Penumbra Foundation 36 East 30th Street New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

Lillian Bassman was one of the most important fashion photographers of the 20th century. Her imagery was transformed into poetic and glamourous works of art, achieved through innovative darkroom techniques such as bleaching, blurring, staining, etc. She was interested, she said, in “creating a new kind of vision aside from what the camera saw.”  In this workshop participants will explore black & white silver gelatin darkroom printing techniques that involve manipulating and experimenting, drawing inspiration from the legendary Lillian Bassman.

Attendees begin by shooting and developing black and white film in our northlight studio. They will then create silver gelatin prints in the darkroom, transforming and re-interpreting them into one of a kind works of art through various manipulations. Each final print will be unique and hands on from start to finish. Participants are also welcome to use existing black and white film negatives for reprinting in a whole new way! This workshop will introduce or refresh participants to working with film and most importantly will be a satisfying and playful opportunity for students to expand and re-imagine the expressive possibilities of black and white darkroom printing!

About Tricia Rosenkilde:
Tricia Rosenkilde is a fine art photographer specializing in and working exclusively with alternative processes, in particular platinum/palladium printing. Inspired by old world European scenes, her early work “Panoramic Pinholes” captured images from the chateaux and gardens of various regions of France and Italy. She is currently at work on creating a new series of large format platinum prints portraying horses. A graduate of Rutgers University with a Fine Art degree in Painting and Art History, she incorporated those interests into her passion for working with expressive historic photographic processes.  Tricia is a dedicated faculty instructor with twenty years experience of teaching courses and workshops at the International Center of Photography. She has also taught at The Center for Alternative Photography NYC, Seton Hall University, NJ Center for Visual Arts, Parsons School of Design NYC and the Morgan Library NYC.
