Exhibition: Andy Warhol - Polaroid Pictures at Bastian Gallery

  • BASTIAN 8 Davies Street London, England, W1K 3DW United Kingdom (map)

With this exhibition of Andy Warhol’s Polaroid Pictures, BASTIAN’s London gallery will open its doors on Davies Street in Mayfair, UK. This first exhibition includes more than sixty portraits and self-portraits of Warhol, some of them being exhibited for the first time! His Polaroids depict artists, actors, politicians and friends of his eccentric factory entourage, through which Warhol appears as both a subject and a chronicler of his time. The opening exhibition thus provides an intimate glimpse into New York in the 1970s and '80s, at the time of the emergence of a new visual culture.

At the center of the exhibition is one of the rare, large-format Polaroid portraits by Andy Warhol. "Selbstporträt" (1979) shows a close-up of the artist's close-up face in a grimace that creates a personal but seemingly alienating encounter with the viewer. The idea of a fictive surface in which reality is only an illusion also captures the series of portraits of famous artists of the artist. In addition to friends, visitors and guests of Studio 54, these photographs - initially merely preliminary work for Warhol's iconic screen-printed portraits - show a lack of pathos or individuation. In so doing, they underscore Warhol's idea of an epoch in which "everyone looks the same and acts, and everyone becomes the same." The exhibition features personalities such as David Hockney,

The Big Shot camera was a central medium of Andy Warhol from the early 1970s until his death in 1987. The camera, developed by Polaroid for portrait use, has a simple design with built-in flash, viewfinder and fixed focus, allowing the artist to capture his subjects immediately and immediately. Using a variety of Polaroid films and techniques, Warhol's productive work reflects his extensive practice and ongoing fascination with consumer culture. At the same time, the photographs show the beginnings of an era of society characterized by visual culture and illusion.
