Interview: Michael Strickland - “Of the Earth”

In rural Kansas, large-format photographer and master printer Michael Strickland is pushing traditional printmaking to extraordinary lengths. For his Of the Earth series, Strickland grinds soil, clay, and charred wood gathered from the landscapes he photographs into pigments for his color carbon prints, physically embedding the land within the finished work. We spoke with Strickland about process, place, the disappearing craft of photographic printmaking, and why the physical print still matters.

An Impossibly Normal Life is an artifact from another world, a more loving, inclusive one where who you love is of little societal importance. This fictional story, centered on artist Matthew Finley’s imagined uncle’s idealized life, is created from collected vintage snapshots from around the world. This project shows anyone struggling with identity today, and those around them, the joy of what could have been and can still be.

In This Room Will Survive Me, Cindy Konits uses afternoon light, architecture, and expired instant film to examine interiority as something formed in the rooms we inhabit. Through long, uncertain exposures and chance-driven chemistry, her images merge body, space, and memory into scenes that feel lived rather than observed. The work leaves a quiet proposition: our inner lives are shaped in thresholds, light, and time, and rooms continue to shape us long after we’re gone.

Laura Barth’s photographic practice is an urgent response to the pressures of twenty-first-century womanhood and motherhood—an alchemical process that merges art and science. Her foundational series, “Mythos and Manna,” transforms digital memories and personal upheaval into layered, mythic images through Polaroid emulsion lifts and handwork, blurring the boundaries between memory, artifact, and healing.
